About Thibodaux

The story of Thibodaux began with its incorporation in 1830 when it was given the name Thibodauxville before becoming simply Thibodeaux in 1838. The current spelling of Thibodaux was officially adopted in 1918. As the largest city in Lafourche Parish, Thibodaux is home to Nicholls State University and the corporate headquarters of Rouses Supermarket, a local grocer that has since expanded to have stores throughout the Gulf South.

Attractions & Resources

Among the many factors that make Thibodaux an ideal retirement community are its fair taxes, recreational opportunities and healthcare facilities, which make for a second-to-none experience for all those who call this city their home. From the walking trails and parks to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center’s state-of-the-art Wellness Center, a connection has been made between the needs of keeping Thibodaux residents fit and vibrant as well as addressing the concerns that inevitably come as one ages. Along with walking paths and an extensive sidewalk system throughout the city stretching in to the historic Thibodaux Main Street area of its downtown, the city also offers its own transit system in addition to several other forms of transportation at little to no cost for those wishing to traverse the city streets with ease.

From a climatology standpoint, the city sees more sunny than cloudy days with the annual average high and low temperatures ranging from near 80 to about 60 degrees. In recent years, the City of Thibodaux has been recognized by numerous organizations for being a top place to retire and as a safe community to live in based on crime statistics that routinely demonstrate low numbers in all the major categories of interest. Living in a city that is clearly embedded in the cultural fabric of south Louisiana also lends itself to numerous fairs and festivals of which the Thibodaux Firemen’s Fair is the largest. The annual fair dedicated to raising money for the City’s nationally-recognized volunteer firemen’s department features good eats and free bands performing daily and nightly throughout the four-day event. Live entertainment can also be accessed through the recently remolded Talbot Hall Auditorium on Nicholls campus and an assortment of championship-caliber college sports being contested regularly as well. The City of Thibodaux prides itself on its inclusive nature where everyone is treated like family and is involved in the process of growing the City in a sensible way as to not disrupt the small-town feel and appeal it has to residents and visitors alike.
