After breakfast, grab your keys and get ready to go road-tripping along the National Scenic Boom or Bust Byway — a 136-mile stretch of highway winding through four parishes. The road is steeped with rich history, small-town Southern eateries and easy access to some of the area’s most beautiful outdoor recreation areas. Along the way, you can kayak among centuries-old cypress trees, hike through dense pine forests and fish for your next campout meal. Each stop offers its own unique appeal, from charming towns to scenic roadside views that seem to be made for photo ops.

Another local favorite, R.W. Norton Art Gallery, is home to bountiful gardens with more than 15,000 plants. Lay out a picnic blanket and relax in this hidden oasis framed by seasonal blooms, winding paths and peaceful fountains. Inside, the permanent art collection spans more than 4,000 years, and the impressive research library contains 15,000 volumes, including a very rare edition of John James Audubon’s “The Birds of America.”

Continue your outing at the Shreveport Aquarium, where you can come face to face with sharks, feed stingrays and touch a jellyfish! Or stop by Chimp Haven — the world’s largest chimpanzee sanctuary — just a short drive from Shreveport-Bossier. The sanctuary cares for chimpanzees retired from research and isn’t open to the public daily. However, on select days throughout the year, guests can see the chimps in their natural habitat and learn about this magnificent species.

Thrill seekers will love visiting Gators and Friends Adventure Park, where you can see alligators up close and walk through their petting zoo, which houses kangaroos, donkeys and adorable Scottish Highland cows. And if you’re feeling brave enough, you can even go ziplining over a pit of alligators!

After a long day of touring, what’s better than returning to your campsite? Relax around a fire, roast hot dogs and marshmallows, and fall asleep among the towering pines and vast, open skies.

With all this beauty waiting to be discovered, it’s easy to see how North Louisiana earned the title of “Sportsman’s Paradise.” From scenic drives and wildlife encounters to peaceful lakes and sprawling parks, there’s always an adventure just around the corner.
