Louisiana's Native American History
As a result of early European exploration, some communities in Louisiana are among the oldest in the United States. What truly defines our culture, though, are the legacies left by the Choctaw and Chitimacha tribes that populated the region. An excellent place to learn about the state's Native American cultures? The expansive Poverty Point World Heritage Site, one of 26 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the United States.
Louisiana's Food History
From warming Cajun and Creole dishes to the timeless New Orleans classics like beignets, our food commemorates heritages and traditions from across the globe.
Consider West Africa's influence on jambalaya, a hearty dish not unlike Senegalese jollof rice. Then there's France: The backbone of our cooking, which we call the Holy Trinity (which is, in itself, a nod to the religious culture of the state), is simply a French mirepoix. Natchitoches, Louisiana's famous meat pies were influenced by Spanish empanadas, and the olive-laden New Orleans muffaletta was the genius of Italian immigrants.
