This is an awesome option for those looking to stay close to the coast, and many charter boat captains are docked within a short drive of Louisiana’s largest cities. The Rigolets, Lake Borgne and Chandeleur Sound are all New Orleans-area fishing destinations where fresh catches end up on French Quarter restaurant menus. Baton Rouge, Lafayette and Lake Charles are also a short drive of phenomenal inshore fishing spots.

Small fishing towns like Hopedale and Jean Lafitte offer South Louisiana charm along with charter captains that are experts when it comes to finding where the big ones are biting. And throughout the Atchafalaya Basin region — a massive swath of backcountry that stretches across multiple parishes — you’ll find guides who know just the spot for dropping anchor. 

For a more high-octane adventure, look to such fishing meccas as Venice, Cocodrie and Grand Isle. Full-day and overnight trips are available, meaning that you have more time to reach the depths where massive tarpon, black drum, tuna, grouper and amberjack feed.
