Golf in Louisiana’s Charming, Small Towns

Explore Louisiana's oldest city — and other gorgeous areas  — with this golf-centric trail.

Cane River Queen in Natchitoches

Begin your journey in Natchitoches, Louisiana's original French colony.

Day One: Natchitoches

Begin your journey in Natchitoches, Louisiana's original French colony, with a round at Northwestern Hills Golf Course, a scenic spot just minutes from downtown. When you’re not on the green, wander through the Cane River National Heritage Area, where you can marvel at cobblestone streets, wrought-iron balconies and French Creole townhouses.

No trip here is complete without trying a signature meat pies from local institution Lasyone’s. For a more elevated dining experience, enjoy riverside views and contemporary Louisiana cuisine at Merci Beaucoup Restaurant. Spend the night in one of the town’s charming historic inns, such as the Steel Magnolia House Bed & Breakfast — made famous by the cult-classic film.

Day Two: Marksville

A short drive brings you to Marksville, a town embraced by Louisiana’s lush wetlands and wildlife refuges. Begin your day at Tamahka Trails Golf Club, located at the Paragon Casino Resort, perfect for spending the night. Known for its rolling terrain and tree-lined fairways, the course offers a peaceful yet challenging round of golf.

Afterward, enjoy homestyle Southern favorites at Broken Wheel Brewery & Restaurant. History buff? Explore the Marksville Mounds, an Indigenous archaeological landmark.

Day Three: Kinder

Next, journey to Kinder, located in Louisiana’s historic No Man’s Land. Tee off at Koasati Pines Golf Club, part of the Coushatta Casino Resort, where you can play against natural wetlands and pine forests. Plan to spend the night here, too, whether in the site's luxury RV resort or spacious hotel suites.

After golf, explore the Gas Station Eats Trail, where unassuming roadside stops serve some of the best boudin, cracklins and plate lunches around. Sample local favorites like smoked sausages or fried chicken that rival sit-down restaurants.

Day Four: Alexandria

Conclude your journey in Alexandria with a round at OakWing Golf Club, a Jim Lipe–designed course with wide fairways, water hazards and a strategic layout built for challenges.

Beyond the course, Alexandria offers plenty of cultural gems. Visit the Alexandria Museum of Art, located along the Red River, or stroll through the Alexandria Zoological Park. For dinner, try Spirits Food & Friends, a lively spot for Southern-inspired dishes before winding down in style at the Historic Hotel Bentley.
