Moonlit canoe trips are popular in several areas of Louisiana, but especially at Manchac Wildlife Management Area. Located northwest of New Orleans, the gorgeous Manchac wetlands consist of hundreds of acres of cypress trees and freshwater marshes. Expect to paddle through flat, low marshlands while seeing smooth, tawny bald cypress and tupelo trees. You’ll have easy access to connected lakes, all of which are perfect for duck hunting and bald-eagle spotting.

If adventure calls, tour the area by land, too. The 31-mile Tammany Trace bike trail winds through five quaint communities: Covington, Abita Springs, Mandeville, Lacombe and Slidell. The trace runs to Fontainebleau State Park, a gorgeous campground on the banks of Lake Pontchartrain, where you can sleep beneath the stars.
