Cane Bayou, a lazy tributary of Lake Ponchartrain, is one of The Northshore’s most scenic streams. Fontainebleau State Park and Big Branch National Wildlife Refuge border the area, surrounding it with dense forests. As you paddle the second half of the stream, glimpse at gorgeous cypress trees and marshlands.

Perfect for novice paddlers or those in need of a light trip, Cane Bayou is only about a mile long. The avid explorer can paddle for hours, though, if they enter the state park and national refuge.

While on Louisiana's Northshore, be sure to stop at one of the area's many breweries. Abita Brewing Company, for example, creates their flagship Abita Amber and raspberry-infused Purple Haze at their Covington brewhouse. Stop by for a tour or just a taste in their taproom.
