The calm, slow-moving waters of Bayou Teche make it a peaceful route for the novice paddler. Begin your adventure at Jeanerette City Park for the entire 37-mile trip or at one of the five other entry points for a shorter experience. Soak in the vibrant beauty of cypress, magnolia and redbud trees. Incredible wildlife like bald eagles and turtles call the area home.

The land and water are also the ancestral home of the Chitimacha Tribe, who named the waterway "teche," meaning "snake," for how it winds through the wetlands. To learn more about the tribe and their connection to this land, stop by the Chitimacha Museum in Charenton. Known as the finest basket makers in North America, the Chitimacha Tribe’s craft is showcased at the Chitimacha Museum along with displays covering customs, lifestyle, ceremonies and more.
