Slip your paddle into the glassy hush of Black Bayou’s Eagle’s Nest Trail, where skyscraper cypress trees give refuge to darting dragonflies. Musked by hardwood, the air is made thick with the music of croaking frogs, chirping songbirds and chittering nutria.

Chart your own course on this 5.1‑mile out‑and‑back trail, where dense banks press close until an open reach unfurls midway. Once you hit the wider bayou, keep an eye out for nesting eagles and eaglets.

After a day on the water, fuel up at Restaurant Cotton with braised duck tacos or fruit-forward cocktails from their rooftop bar, The Eli. Can’t get enough wildlife? See more species at Louisiana Purchase Gardens & Zoo, a lively contrast to a quiet day on the water.
