In Cajun French, Petite Anse means "Little Cove." This particular bayou, whose waters are smooth and calm, runs along the west side of Avery Island before flowing south into Vermilion Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. You’ll notice Louisiana’s swamps, whose flora (think: cypress and tupelo trees) offer Southern-gothic views. It’s not uncommon to spot blue heron, either.

Marvel more at the wonders of nature. Visit the nearby Rip Van Winkle Gardens and stroll through nearly 15 acres of lush, semi-tropical greenspace nestled amongst 350-year-old oak trees. Or hike through the Bayou Teche National Wildlife Refuge, where prized Louisiana black bears, songbirds and waterfowl thrive.
