The museum is a rare, intact steam powered water works that dates from 1887 where rare steam engines and examples of the evolution of water purification can be seen. It was America's last operating steam powered municipal water works when the steam pumps were finally retired in 1980. A National Historic Landmark and a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.
