The Pontchartrain Conservancy reconstructed the historic New Canal Lighthouse lighthouse after it was severely damaged by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005. The Conservancy incorporated original wood from the 1890 lighthouse that stood on the site and now operates as the New Canal Lighthouse Museum and Education Center.
The New Canal Lighthouse Museum and Education Center educates locals and visitors about the water quality and habitats of the Lake Pontchartrain Basin, PC's Multiple Lines of Defense Strategy, critical coastal issues, and the history of the lighthouse. Open to the public for tours by appointment.
