North Rampart Main Street
Few zip codes in the country can claim the pedigree of North Rampart Main Street. It borders two of the most iconic neighborhoods in New Orleans – The French Quarter and Tremé. It oozes with history and legend.
Start with Armstrong Park, a 32-acre cornucopia of treasures, including the Mahalia Jackson Theatre, shaded walking paths with ornate bridges over a meandering man-made lagoon, and an ever-evolving collection of meaningful sculptures that pay homage to the music and culture of New Orleans. Perhaps the most hallowed ground in the park is Congo Square, where slaves and free people of color were allowed to gather on Sundays to dance and drum, sowing the seeds of jazz. Still considered a spiritual locus by voodoo practitioners, it is a place of celebration and reflection.
Outside of the park’s gates there’s much more to discover, such as the historic Saenger Theatre, the Jazz & Heritage Wein Cultural Center and New Orleans African American Museum. Want to party with the locals? Don’t miss Congo Square Rhythms Festival, Treme' Creole Gumbo Festival or NOLA Reggae Fest.
If you’ve still got some energy to burn or want to immerse yourself in more local culture, explore the 2.6-mile Lafitte Greenway, a linear park for biking, swimming and year-round events and festivals. And because this is New Orleans, there is no shortage of fine and casual dining like the vibrant Palm and Pine or the classic tavern-style Jewel of the South. Then finish off the day at a nearby watering hole like Bar Tonique with its exhaustive menu or Voodoo Lounge open 24/7.
