Houma to Cocodrie
Experience the ultimate coastal road trip along Louisiana's scenic Highway 56, following the winding path of Bayou Terrebonne as it flows south to Terrebonne Bay and out to the Gulf of Mexico. Along the way, soak in the authentic Cajun culture and get up close and personal with the local fishing, shrimping and oyster boats.
Stop at the charming town of Chauvin, located 14 miles into the journey, and take in the picturesque views of the bayou. Then, continue on to the Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium, a renowned marine research center, located at the 30-mile point. Be sure to climb the observation tower for an unforgettable bird's-eye view of the vast wetlands that extend as far as the eye can see.
As you journey out of Houma, moderate traffic accompanies you, but the majority of the route provides a shoulder. Although the last 10 miles may not have a shoulder, traffic should be light. This out-and-back route allows you to start and end your trip at any point, but be sure to avoid using Highway 57 to make a loop. Get ready for an unforgettable adventure through the natural beauty of Louisiana's coastal region.
When you return, make time to tour Golden Ranch Farms, a historic sugarcane field. Its 50,000 acres make a gorgeous backdrop for deer and waterfowl, which frequent the property. Chauvin Sculpture Garden, another serene stop, showcases more than 100 intricate, bayou-side sculptures — each one inspired by celestial figures — and a 45-foot-tall lighthouse.
