Brown pelicans dive into the water, seagulls appear to float on the wind above the shore and crabs scamper out of reach. Grand Isle State Park is a natural haven on a popular barrier island off the coast of Louisiana. A beach ridge created by the action of the waves of the Gulf of Mexico, Grand Isle serves as a breakwater between the Gulf and the network of inland channels that connect to the tributaries of the Mississippi River. It is also the launching point for excellent deep-sea salt-water fishing adventures. Some 280 species of fish are known to make their home in these waters. Canoeing or kayaking in the Gulf waters can be fun as you ride the swells and watch for dolphins. Bring your boat or rent one on the island. You'll find plenty of nearby picnic areas – and some good restaurants – when you're ready to take a break. Grand Isle State Park is on Admiral Craik Drive, Grand Isle.
