Opelousas Main Street
Opelousas Main Street offers a variety of experiences for the senses! Visitors will enjoy the city's creativity, which comes from the diversity of influences that assimilated here — Indigenous, French, Acadian and more. As the third oldest city in Louisiana, there is an abundance of late 19th and early 20th century buildings in various (and grand) styles in the city’s National Historic District. Main Street is anchored by Courthouse Square, but it could be called Live Oak Square due to the abundance of these magnificent trees, the charter member being the massive 350-year-old Jim Bowie Oak.
But there’s more to meet the eye on Main Street, dotted with eight-foot tall, brightly painted sculptures of fiddles known as Fiddle Mania. But you’ll also notice creativity spilling over into murals and even painted traffic boxes. The citizen-artists often go to Art Box Studio & Gallery to get their supplies and ideas.
When you’re ready to activate your taste buds, there are plenty of Cajun and Creole choices! Experience eating locally and enjoy unique specialty items like boudin stuffed chicken wings or yam country pies. Try award-winning salads at Back In Time, which doubles as a gift shop.
When your ears are ready for their turn, Opelousas is ready. Although officially known as the Zydeco Capital of the World, you’ll also find Cajun, Creole, swamp pop and country music throughout the city. Don’t miss the annual Zydeco Breakfast held during Labor Day; but if you can’t wait, head to Toby's for a variety of local sounds.
