One of the most dramatic incidents of the Civil War supplied the fabric for the story of The Horse Soldiers, John Ford’s epic production starring John Wayne. Union colonel Benjamin H. Grierson, is ordered to take 1,700 men on a cavalry raid from the Tennessee border through Mississippi to destroy railroad supply lines, bridges and commissaries. Scenes from Horse Soldiers were filmed at Oakland Plantation in Natchitoches near the Cane River Creole National Heritage Area.
