The Buccaneer
The Buccaneer tells the story of Jean Lafitte, the nefarious pirate, during the War of 1812 and the attempt of the British to capture New Orleans. The film was shot on location around New Iberia, LA. The Shadows-on-the-Teche Plantation served as Governor Claiborne’s mansion in the film. However, not everyone was pleased with this film. Henri de Balther Claiborne, the great-grandson of former Louisiana governor William Claiborne, filed a lawsuit for damages against Paramount, claiming that the film was a "slanderous misrepresentation" because it depicted a romance between Lafitte and a daughter of Claiborne. In reality, Claiborne's first daughter had died years before the fictional romance could have taken place, while his younger daughter was born in the mid-1810s. The film features the likes of Charlton Heston, Yul Brynner, Claire Bloom and more.
