The Host

Apparently, author Stephanie Meyer was so impressed with ‘Hollywood South’ that her first post-Twilight novel, The Host, also was filmed in Baton Rouge. Set in a post-apocalyptic future, an alien race is taking over human bodies and those that don’t become hosts are hunted down. When Melanie, one of the few uninhabited humans left, goes on the run, she makes a daring leap from her second-story balcony into her garden pond below. Downtown Baton Rouge residents should recognize the Capitol Park Museum and its reflecting pool, just a block away from the State Capitol.

There’s probably not a better place for an introduction to Louisiana’s culture than the Capitol Park Museum. From a 48-foot wooden shrimp trawler to Buddy Guy’s polka dot Stratocaster guitar, the first floor illustrates the unique elements that have shaped Louisiana’s way of life throughout the years. Learn about the styles of music that reflect the diversity of settlers that made Louisiana their home, check out a Civil War submarine, and take a literal road trip through the state. There’s plenty to see and do for the whole family!
