Zachary

Many Louisiana cities are named for entrepreneurs and landowners, and Zachary is no exception. In the 1880s, Darel Zachary donated part of his farm in East Baton Rouge Parish (about 16 miles north of Baton Rouge) to the Illinois Central Railroad, which built a depot on his former property and effectively established the city.

A fire in 1903 nearly destroyed Zachary, but many of its historical buildings remain intact. You can visit the Zachary Train Depot, Ratcliff House and Old Town Hall while in town. Golf at Copper Mill Golf Club and concerts at Teddy's Juke Joint are among Zachary's other attractions.
