Though part of the City of New Orleans, Old Algiers offers a small-town feel, with businesses and residences coexisting side-by-side. Small parks and play spots dot the area for the kids, and small retailers, restaurants, cafes and bars are found aplenty. It’s easy to get your morning fuel at Tout de Suite Cafe, then head off to see the very cool Rosetree Blown Glass Studio and Gallery or shop for trinkets at Beatrix Bell Handcrafted.

Chow down on tempting tacos from Barracuda Tacos. To get a hands-on experience in creating your own Creole and Cajun dishes, book at Casa Pelican B&B, a charming lodging option that offers cooking classes. And for a unique experience, stop by The Crown & Anchor English Pub for a nightcap.

Jazz was popular in Algiers, where there were many clubs and joints featuring traveling "big names" as well as popular local bands, such as the Henry "Red" Allen, Matthews Brothers, Manuel Manetta and Thomas "Kid" Valentine, who lived in the area and performed around the world. Discover these musicians and more, on the Algiers Historical Society’s Jazz Walking Tours.

The Old Algiers area is served by ferry service from downtown New Orleans that offers a five-minute scenic ride across the river. The best view of the City of New Orleans is from the Old Algiers levee.
