New Iberia’s history is documented throughout town.

New Iberia’s history is documented throughout the town.

New Iberia, known as the “Queen City of the Teche,” is among Louisiana’s oldest towns. The city was founded in 1779 by a band of Spanish settlers led by Don Francisco Bouligny and originally named “Nueva Iberia.” New Iberia celebrates its location along the Bayou Teche and its resulting influences with the Bayou Teche Museum, displaying interactive exhibits that showcase the culture and industries of this area along the Bayou. Or, explore over 17,000 documents, photographs, oral histories, archaeological artifacts and original furnishings at Shadows-on-the-Teche, a National Trust historic site constructed in 1834.

The New Iberia Main Street Historic District is filled with shops, museums, restaurants and beautiful architecture. Enjoy a fresh coffee and cake or a full-fledged brunch at Church Alley Cafe & Bistro before setting out for a day of exploration. But save room for a Famous RocStar Burger from RocStar Cafe, or try one of their delicious daily specials! And if you need a snack later or gifts for the folks back home, Cane River Pecan Company has just what you’re looking for. And don’t forget to grab a walking tour brochure to ensure that you don’t miss any of the area’s highlights!

For some outdoor fun, venture across Duperier Bridge to New Iberia’s kayak dock and marina on Bayou Teche Paddle Trail and paddle along the tranquil bayou waters. And of course, can’t miss events in the area include the Books Along the Teche Literary Festival, World Championship Gumbo Cookoff, Louisiana Sugarcane Festival and many more.
