The United Houma Nation Vocational Rehabilitation Program has been in existence for the last 24 years. Our annual powwow's purpose is to not only share our culture and heritage, but to also raise awareness of the skills and abilities that individuals with disabilities bring to our communities through employment. Annually we strive to feature the visible, and often invisible, men and women with disabilities who prove that they ARE an important part of our workforce.
Our annual powwow serves as a social, cultural, and spiritual gathering that brings together our Native American community to celebrate their heritage, traditions, and values. The purpose includes:
- Cultural Preservation: Powwows help preserve Native American traditions, customs, and language. Through dance, song, and storytelling, they maintain and pass down cultural practices from one generation to the next.
- Community Building: Powwows are a space for Native American people to come together, reconnect, and strengthen community bonds. They provide an opportunity for different tribes and nations to unite, share experiences, and celebrate collective identity.
- Spiritual Significance: Many powwows have a spiritual or ceremonial aspect, often rooted in the belief that dance, song, and prayer connect participants to their ancestors and the Creator.
- Celebration and Joy: Powwows are also a time for fun, joy, and celebration. Participants take pride in showcasing their dance regalia, crafts, and performances. It’s a time of collective pride and joy in Native American identity.
- Sharing and Education: Powwows welcome people from outside Native American communities, providing an opportunity for non-Native people to learn about Native culture, history, and values.
The powwow includes various activities, such as Native American singing, traditional dances, arts and crafts vendors, and food sharing. It is a celebration of life, culture, and heritage.
